A hut extension for a growing family - who already made so much use of their magical spot amongst the woods.
Getting close to the finish line on this alteration to the beautiful Bothan Caorann. With the owners expecting their first grandchild, they’ve craved an even more flexible space for all the family to enjoy.
It’s been a pleasure back working with them and improving a design that was already our favourite to-date. A perfect place amongst nature.

Don’t you love working with brilliant people?! Jamie’s up to his magic again…
With no identical reclaimed oak flooring available for this hut extension, the clients sourced some beech instead. We love honest details, so in working out how to fix the saddle securely, we settled upon some gorgeous bow ties (or are they butterflies?!)
To Jamie’s great joy, the clients loved the idea of a variety of timbers - a talking point, and likely great fun for the imminent arrival of grandchildren enjoying the hut.
Maple, purple heart, sapele, iroko, black walnut and ash. Looking forward to getting some wax on them.
Fine craftsmanship but also what this ought to be…. fun!

Stunning morning around the Pentlands and on-site as we work on a wee extension to Bothan Caorann. Very amusing that it’s made the local press 😂 - @highlandhutter clearly worked his spell with The Art of Hutting, spreading the beauty of @reforestingscotland’s #thousandhutscampaign
Filled to the brim by a fully rewilded weekend…. After Saturday’s wonderfully inspiring @scotlandtbp conference in Perth; made the most of a chance to get to @treesforlifeuk’s rewilding centre @visitdundreggan. I’m guaranteed happy combining family woodland walks with brilliant architecture - @threesixtyarch 👏👏👏

Another calming spruce ply internal finish, complemented with dressed larch and a reclaimed beech floor.
The open shelving between the bedroom and living space will be cracking once it has some greenery amongst it. One of those nice design tweaks that can develop with the right thinking during a build.
Clients still to finish reconditioning the old stove, fit the hearth, then oil/wax all surfaces. They’re then introducing their own interpretation of a kitchen and tall headboard to separate the bed area…
I truly hope they’ll also have a beautiful matching larch ladder too and not the temporary CLS site version they asked us to leave 🤦♂️
Now on to extend our favourite past hut build with its full range of gorgeous details and furniture…

Exterior of our current hut now pretty much complete. Enjoying the continuous burnt drip sill that runs right around. It adds some interest, whilst it also enabled us to order 2400 lengths of larch cladding for reduced offcuts.
All in all a pretty good celebration of larch (thanks to @tyninghame_sawmill ) particularly with the exposed external rafters.

Deliberately got Jamie in this progress shot, because the build wouldn’t be close to what it is without him. A pure superstar! Ever grateful to work alongside him.
Some nice details coming together too….

I recently reawakened my LinkedIn profile and I’m loving how it’s opened a window to so much inspiring rewilding content. I’ve even had some early stage discussions with one of big rewilding charities. If the project can come to fruition then I will be one very happy designer and joiner!
By all means come say hello and connect on LinkedIn…
Solid 150x150 posts, split posts or just a debarked tree trunk in each corner? There are merits to all three ideas…
Sharing progress on a new design of huts, filled with light and flowing beautifully between inside and out. Exposed douglas fir rafters, sedum roof and outdoor cooking. This Olson Kundig inspired form echoes everything we love for a hut, particularly the tall views up into the tree canopy.
As the core details evolve, we’re enjoying the potential to design both smaller and larger models for non hutting situations.

Not a hut immersed in nature, but happy clients for a different reason; as we complete a fully insulated and beautifully clad refurb. #millboarduk #allinthedetails #northberwick
Huge congratulations to Peter @highlandhutter for the release of The Art of Hutting. He’s beautifully curated so many aspects for your hutting inspiration!
Proud to have some of our work featured within it and contribute towards the joys of hutting life.

It’s fair to believe a lot of folk are battling through a pretty challenging environment just now. I've had far too many potential projects disappear or get nudged into the 'paused project' category, which invites some introspection, a fair bit of worry, and a strong desire for more lovely projects on the horizon.....
One benefit however, is that it’s encouraged me to read START WITH WHY by the fabulous Simon Sinek.
Highly recommended, and thankfully impossible to spoil even if I detail a core message; that every company knows WHAT they do, and most know HOW they do WHAT they do, but few can articulate WHY they do WHAT they do.
I’ve always known why I do what I do, but I’ve only ever detailed what I do. Thankfully I now appreciate the importance of highlighting my driving purpose…
My WHY:
For the joy in surpassing what clients’ believe is possible with their brief.
As for my HOW:
Questions - lots of them, that get to the heart of the matter. Then responding to the challenge with a beautiful solution full of clever ideas and lovely details using honest materials.
And my WHAT:
Helping clients transform ordinary spaces into special places.
Maybe you know people who’d benefit from the value of my WHY, backed up by our HOW and WHAT? And who doesn’t love the satisfaction of a successful referral?
Thanks for reading 🙏 and again, I definitely recommend the book #startwithwhy #designandbuild

Calm, contentedness; exploring a hutting site. Taking in the finest ancient trees, young saplings, beautiful ferns, natural clearings, sight lines, elevations, the relationship of spaces, and how the light changes in this stunning landscape. All considerations informing how this woodland might be best supported and enjoyed by its lucky owners. #happyplace #hutting #1000huts #huttingscotland #slowliving #woodlandregeneration
An early design for an inviting structure, which might develop into BIG ambitions….
Its form is modest, yet it has space for work, relaxation, exercise, or entertaining.
It’s understated, but every elevation can justify being centrepiece within a garden or landscape.
Its corners invite integrated planting, or even to be dressed with living walls.
The flexibility to choose how it’s oriented, and a preferred configuration of doors, windows, skylight and materials.
And the really ambitious element?
A version that sits upon a turntable, rotating to follow the light and change the view…
Fancy a spin?!
Thoughts welcomed…
By all means, save or share too.

A joy to take Isla down to Bothan Caorann this afternoon. She LOVED it, and wants me to build her a cabin in the woods 😍
I recently registered for Google Reviews to help SEO rankings; and a number of clients have kindly submitted 5⭐️ reviews and some lovely comments.
Although self promotion is awkward, I thought worth sharing this excerpt from the lovely Heggies’ review - as it made me laugh out loud when I first read it!
But they’re not wrong, I do ask a lot of questions; because I do not like average. I do however love understanding what the challenges are and finding beautiful creative solutions. So, as it says above ‘be prepared for testing questions….’ 😁

A recommendation to delve into @scotlandtbp and download some or all of their wee (free) ebooks. Beautiful content inspiring all ages to care more for our woodlands, mountains, rivers and peatlands.
They each describe how the land has evolved, the careful balances at play, where we are now, and what you can do to help make a difference.
We were up in the Cairngorms at the weekend enjoying a munro and a loch paddle. However, it was the complexity and tranquility of the Rothiemurchus Forest around Loch an Eilein that’s not left my thoughts since. Utterly magical.

I do enjoy meeting properly lovely people and chatting about huts beneath towering Scots Pines, a blue sky and a hot sun. #huttingscotland #1000huts
After a significant spike in followers over the long weekend, having shared our Bothan Caorann build on the Thousand Huts FB page - a chance to introduce myself and detail how I work.
I’m Rob - a designer and joiner, with a love of the outdoors. I conceive and build beautiful structures, as well as reworking dysfunctional layouts. Obtaining great satisfaction making spaces work to their full potential, and ensuring they properly connect with what’s alongside.
Designs include huts, cabins, bothies, nature shelters, garden rooms, home offices and gyms, usually resting upon groundscrew foundations, but I’ve a yearning to build mobile, moveable architecture too! 🛞🛞
Often it’s the problem solving that offers some of the greatest satisfaction; understanding a clients’ challenge, then designing a thoughtful solution with honest materials and details.
I’m always all ears if you’ve got an interesting brief that I may be able to help with…
